Aussie rules weekend

I love playing Aussie rules football (via the GGAFL). Its fast paced, hard hitting, continuous play with a ton of skill. Plus the guys out there are really cool. I've played a lot of different sports and there is nothing else really like footy. Think of it like soccer crossed with football and played sorta like rugby. Certainly not a game for the meek, especially when you play in the ruck. Take for example this mornings league email:

"During the second game on Saturday Oakland's newly appointed captain Benny Atkins was suffered a leg injury. Today he went to the doctor and was diagnosed with a fractured fibula. That was the lovely cracking sound we heard as he went down. In some ways it is a blessing as the fracture was clean and should fully heal in 5 to 6 weeks. Certainly better than the knee injury we all feared but disappointing just the same. "

It happens.

You know, I suspect that most US folks have no idea about Aussie football. I never heard of the sport until I happened to be in NZ during some major event...it was 7am and the noise from the bar was loud enough to penetrate the conference room several hundred feet away. I decided to watch part of the game that night and I was impressed...

I can't stand US baseball (tooooo slow) nor football (tooooo many interruptions – not to mention the ‘jock’ attitude. ‘Soccer’ AKA ‘football’ is interesting at times…but it seems so regulated and constrained. On the flip side, AU footy is about the only sport I find interesting (outside skateboarding, BMXing, and Motocross). Simply put, Aussie football is fast paced, skill based, and requires some hard core players that seem to never run out of steam. My ADHD persona is never board during one of these games!

If you have never heard or looked at how sports are played 'down under', well I suggest you check it out. As a hard core geek, I found the AU style of football intriguing and refreshing....and that is saying a lot :)

Very true, but it is growing well in popularity. The leagues are getting quite big all across the U.S. There are even national tournaments.

I plan to one of these days first hand. A small life goal is to actually play some footy in AU. :)
